Apsara - Traditional Cambodian Dance!

One of the traditional dances of Cambodia is Khmer often referred to as ‘Apsara dance’. It is better described as ‘Dance-Drama’. Because the dances are not merely dance but are also meant to convey a message or story. This includes performing a part of Ramayana, the ancient Indian epic. Some of them are based on the legendary battles and mythical sagas. Khmer classical dancers use special movements and gestures to tell a story similar to mime, but in a more vague way. Dancers do not speak or sing; they dance with the slight smile and are never supposed to open their mouths. It can be compared to French ballet. Dancers flex their fingers backwards, as well as toe when dancing. Gestures in Apsara dance are called kbach. They are divided into many categories depending which body parts are involved. Hand gestures using finger movements are called cheep. They represent various things from nature such as fruits, flowers and leaves. In the olden days, training is given in the morning and regular schooling in the afternoon. If you planning to visit Cambodia do go in the month of October or November, which is the perfect, time to go for a vacation in Cambodia as it is coolest and driest season of the year.
